Local Taxes and Fees
When renting a car abroad, please note that any additional services or extras booked in advance and paid directly at the rental desk are subject to local taxes and surcharges.
This includes, for example:
Child seats
Navigation devices (if not included in your package)
One-way fees (when returning the car to a different station)
Insurance and coverage purchased at the rental desk
Vehicle upgrades or rental extensions
Any extras added at pickup or return directly with the rental company
Local Taxes and Surcharges in the USA
In the United States, various sales taxes and surcharges apply to all extras paid directly to the rental company. Rates differ from state to state and from station to station.
The main taxes and surcharges include:
Sales Tax – varies between rental stations
Airport Fees (e.g., CRF – Concession Recovery Fee) – usually between 11–15%
County Tax – depends on the county
Local regulators set the type and amount of these charges, and they may change from time to time.
For detailed, up-to-date information (as of September 1, 2025), please refer to the following tables:
Each table allows you to search by rental station (pickup location) and review the applicable charges.
Local Taxes and Surcharges in Other Destinations Worldwide
Outside the USA – especially in Europe – all extras paid directly to rental companies are subject to Value Added Tax (VAT). In addition, some countries or stations may charge further surcharges, such as:
Environmental taxes
Airport fees
Premium station surcharges (for example, at central railway stations)
As with the USA, the type and amount of taxes and surcharges are determined by local regulators and may change periodically.
